At the start I was very unsure as to why I needed/wanted to use Twitter seeing as I was on Facebook and didn’t ‘need’ another social networking site. However since joining Twitter I have quickly become a Twitter addict.
For anyone new to Twitter, the way it works is very simple. You have 140 characters to write anything you want. If you have protected tweets then only the people that follow you can see what you write. If your tweets are unprotected then they will appear on the public timeline which everyone has access to. I initially had unprotected tweets but found there were too many bots and spam so switched to protected tweets.
There are some things that I have found useful with Twitter (in no particular order)
* the search engine has enabled me to follow fellow law grads and blogs as well as practising solicitors and others in the legal profession (I have even managed to find recruiters, did I mention I am currently seeking better paid legal roles?!)
* follow friday – people you follow recommend others to follow and you converse with a whole host of different people
* trending topics – finding out about news before most of the major channels cover it
* linking my blog to my tweet, so every time I post a new blog my followers can see the new blog post
* linking linkedin to my twitter
Since having my Twitter account I have definitely conversed with people all over the world and different people that I wouldn’t usually speak to. Its great!!I have even managed to make actual friends with some of my followers, who are now on my Facebook too!
The one thing you have to bare in mind is that you can’t be narrow minded. Follow anyone, start a conversation! Its a lot of fun!
