Lately I have been reminiscing about everything and just thinking extra hard about my life in general.

I need to stay focused on my ‘dream’, that career in the law as a solicitor and nothing else. Since working at this law firm my focus has been elsewhere as I thought I had it all sorted at this firm.

Now that my thinking is over, this is what I plan on doing:-

  1. I do not want to be in the same position as I am in right now, in 6 months time (I have had enough of working every day but hopefully this can change)
  2. In connection with the first point, I have already looked and applied for paid legal jobs, and shall apply for all legal jobs, now that I have more experience
  3. Quit my weekend job, or look for a better job for the weekend which allows me to have early finishes all the time and better pay. I have thankfully been told of a new opportunity in a better company and I will definitely be applying asap! Hopefully I won’t need to look for a weekend job as the weekday job would be properly paid, but if my position is the same then I will have to!
  4. Save money for a big trip abroad in exactly 6 months time (let’s just say I will need to save LOAD$)
  5. Finally I may consider studying intermediate Spanish, seeing as beginners Spanish will be complete by the end of this month. Thankfully the intermediate course is only 9 months as opposed to the 1 year for the beginner’s course.

I really do hope my ‘plan’ works but with everything the way it is, it’s going to be hard!

  • Poonam,

It sounds like a brilliant plan!!!

    Hope you’re well xx

  • Hey AW

thank you, I hope it works! I need to stay focused! I’m ok apart from being shattered from work! How about you? Any luck with jobs?

  • I’m okay, thanks.

No luck with a permanent job yet. But starting a 3 month contract next week with a sole practitioner. Should keep me occupied for a while. I’m trying to work on getting myself a training contract but no idea how to get one of those…

    xx

  • That’s good to hear! 3 months is enough time to impress the sole practitioner! You could also try and make a few contacts if you can. Hopefully you impress him/her and they want to take you on! Fingers crossed for you! Training contracts are even worse than gold dust at the minute, it’s so unfair!!

  • Yes, 3 months should be enough to make an impression BUT will have to stay focused too on getting more paralegal work (and of course one of those unobtainable TCs that are floating about).

  • Hopefully it’ll work out for all of us, we can all do it!!

  • Just out of interest is your spanish course a distant learning course? I was thinking of taking up spanish again but have no time to actually attend classes… I’m trying to work out if distant learning language courses would be a good option to consider. Any views?

  • Yes, it will all work out in the end. We just have to make sure we don’t give up!

  • Yeh my course is distance learning, I would never have done it if it wasn’t for my friend who works there (and is the owner of this site!!), and who sorta encouraged me to do it. Have a look at the www.open.ac.uk site, it has more detail on it! I had online tutorials every Monday evening (except a few every 2 weeks) and then 6 assessments in between as well as the end of course reading/writing and speaking assessments. It sounds a lot, it can be, but its good to do something different, for me anyways. I think the whole course has changed now to be more flexible but I’m not too sure.

There are way more job (and tc) opportunities in London compared to Leicester though :(

  • Thanks for the link Poonam. I’ll look into it.

Theres probably more law students/graduates in London too! I can’t say whether you’re at a disadvantage… rather you might be in a better position. Either way, my wisest friend has always maintained that if a person stays determined and works hard, that person will get to where they want to (eventually).

    Fingers crossed! ;-)

  • Your welcome! This wise person sounds like some of the wiser people I know too! Hard work does pay off but during the hard working bit sometimes it feels real crappy!! We just have to stick it out I guess!!
