This story has been about in Leicester for a long time but only now has it got even more interesting!!
Two men have appeared in court accused of murdering a solicitor.
Brian Farrell, (34), of Queensborough Terrace, Bayswater, London, and John Cort, (54), of Rutland Street, Leicester, are jointly charged with murdering Vina Patel at Cort Solicitors, in Blackbird Road, Leicester, on January 15 this year.
The men appeared at Leicester Magistrates’ Court this morning.
They were remanded in custody and will appear at Leicester Crown Court later in the year.
So we have Mr John Cort, a qualified solicitor, being accused of killing his partner at Cort Solicitors. Another part of this is that Mr Cort not only killed someone but he also took client money with him!! Apparently all mortgage payments that are due for completion can not be found! He apparently has the money somewhere where it can not be traced and a whole load of clients are being chased after for repayments from their relevant mortage lenders!!
The worst thing is, I went for an interview at this firm and was interviewed by John Cort. He was incredibly mean and kept asking why I wanted to study law as it was a waste!! What goes around comes around! Unfortunately the client base can not be found as all paperwork has disappeared and there is no estimate as to how many clients’ money has gone missing!!
I can’t wait to see how this case progresses!

First thought: I would have put the murder higher up the list than the stealing!
Second thought: OMGosh Pooni could have been working for a theif and murderer. (I’m glad you’re NOT working there as you could have been caught up in all the chaos.)

The murder is really really bad I agree as not only has he left his partners family in turmoil because of her death but also knowing that it was her own partner is bad too! He must have known her family and he killed her in cold blood!!
I do still feel that the money part of it is bad too, just think how many people who bought a house with their firm. There is no list and there could be loads of people unable to pay as they didn’t do their conveyancing properly. Not only has he affected his partners family but all those unknown people may have no remedy, I don’t know what they can do to prove he did wrong too!
I am so glad I didn’t like it there, I would hate to be caught up in this mess! Another firm has taken over but imagine the mess they find that’s all been hidden!!
I think another court date is set for October so we shall see what happens!

The one thing I will say on this is that since all these weird cases about for example the man who held that girl for 18 whole years, no one can truly know their neighbours or people they know. Everyone believed them to be normal human beings yet then they are caught up in the news for the most horrible crimes and ill treatment of people it doesn’t seem to match.
I do not know John personally but like I said before I am waiting for the outcome of this case. The main reason I posted about this was that I had actually known of this firm, it was in Leicester and it interested me! Pathetic for our comments? It is an interesting story and we are all providing our comments on this, it is a free country after all!

Clearly you have misunderstood my blog post and my subsequent comments. Had you bothered to check the main reason for my blog you would know what I post. I see no reason why I have to justify my life to you or why I wrote what I wrote.

Granted there is a second party involved but he isn’t a solicitor! If and when more information comes from this case I will post it!

There are so many other web pages claiming to be fact that you could argue with. Tabloid newspapers for example. This is not a newspaper, so absolutely anything can be put on here with no care in the world.

I am not bitter about the rejection as there wasn’t one in this case. I wasn’t even offered anything from the firm in the first place to have rejected anything.

I’m guessing “Tina Phoenix” may know Mr Cort personally? I think Tina should remember that Ms Patel has been murdered. Ms Patel’s family will have to live without her for no good reason. She may have had children too – ever wondered about them? There are indeed a number of lives that have been affected: Mr Cort’s family’s lives and Ms Patel’s family’s lives too.
Mr Cort, as far as I am aware, is still in the middle of a court case and has been charged with murder. And people will react to this the same way they react to people who have been accused of other vile things. In respect of Mr Cort and his family going through a tough time – if he is innocent then it is unfortunate for him to have been accused. However if you were in the position of having your mother or sister murdered you would want to make sure that the murder was investigated thoroughly. If he is innocent he will be able to reclaim back his life and those who “thought the worst” no longer will.
Poonam I do not think that you have in any way been unfair or condemned Mr Cort as being guilty of murder. You have just stated the facts. You also told as your first impression of the man which is fair for you to do on your very own blog. You have in fact continued to keep aware of what is happening to find out the outcome of the case.

Cort had ‘put around’ rumours that he was very sick in the weeks before the murder. That had led him and Patel, who were the only partners in their firm, to hike the business insurance cover taken out on her life from 500,000 pounds to 1.5 million pounds.
Cort then allegedly hired 37-year-old Brian Farrell to kill Patel and make it look like an accident, Nottingham Crown Court was told

I have no idea who wrote the comments but like I said, I appreciate being kept up to date on this issue. This has made national news. It is both interesting and disgusting at the same time, that’s why people are drawn to this case. Whether the facts stated by the prosecution are true or not, you can not deny that every single factor revealed so far, whether true or not, is disgusting. No normal person would do such a thing. EVERYONE has done something wrong and no one is perfect but that doesn’t mean you go and kill them for the sake of a life insurance policy ok?
I, amongst many other people, am keeping a close eye on this one. I want to see what the defence have to say against all the accusations so far. Like I have said SO many times, we are all entitled to our opinions and what people, other than me comment on here, are not controlled by me. Next time you should think twice before writing such a comment.

The way I am reading it is …everyone (apart from 1) sees the story as one sided so I WILL defend the INNOCENT until PROVEN GUILTY. I …like many others (I believe) will wait until the trial ends. I attend every day at the court and from what I see, the media are only taking snippets out of the evidence provided. Better to see the real picture by attending the trial. Something you should look into POOnam.

I assume you are not the Khan that was the mystery appointment are you? I am not really bothered about prosecution or defence statements. Cort’s extracted funds from me unethically and both parties were jointly responsible for this as partners.
It is really a sad case as there are many victims to these crimes and one thing is sure, someone has done something wrong as there appears to be huge sums of money missing.
I totally appriciate your comments about this site but is this not a general public interest subject? Will you be writing to the national and local newspapers to complain the same to them?
Freedom of speech (providing it is not libelous) is a right of all people of this country and hopefully the press will offer us a balanced view of both sides, then we can make our own minds up.
On a personal note, I as a financial victim hope justice is done and I firmly believe in what goes around comes around!
Lets all try to keep this in perspective and remain calm and dignified.

Justice — April 23rd, 2010 at 11:56 amI am still very shocked and still cannot believe what happened to Mrs Patel. I did work experience at Corts Solicitors in 2007 when I was in year 10. Everyone was very nice to me there including Mr Cort and Mrs Patel. However, there were some things that Mr Cort used to do and say, which i will not say, that were quite questionable. But like i said, when i was there for work experience, everyone was nice to me. I was mostly based with Mrs Patel, and occasionally worked with Mr Cort, which i did not like as some of the things he did were a bit “off” if you know what i mean and made me feel uncomfortable, but i know what i am saying when i say that Mrs Patel was a very nice and caring person. I still cannot believe this happened. I moved out of Leicester 3 years ago and I just heard about this incident a week ago and was shocked that this happened a year ago and the fact that i only found out last week, well you know what that did to me. I am going to stress this point though, Mrs Vina Patel was a lovely woman and very funny too. I will miss her.

I agree innocent until proven gulity, and a lot of people here should have respect for the dead, as she is not here to defend herself.
Whoever did this destoyed the life of a family, and deprived a family of a wife, who was married for 30 years & mother, she was someone’s daughter too, and if this was financially motivated it is pure evil.
I just feel so sorry after all Vina was a law student too with dreams and ambitions, and had to work hard to get where she was, and all this has ended, it is such a wake-up call and a tragedy, I hope that justice is done,as no one deserves to die this was as life is sacred & irreplacable. The person has destoyed so many lives through greed, and they should know the consequences of their actions better if they practice law.
Good luck in your chosen career Poonam, I would ignore some personal comments, especially if they don’t have the guts to say it to your face. You have already proved yourself in qualifying in the academic side of law, and you just don’t know where it will take you – nothing goes to waste

Yes a lot of people know BOTH parties really well but I based my post around having been to the firm and if you see above I haven’t accused anyone of anything, the facts seem to speak for themselves here. I am allowed to have an opinion. I only posted this because it was in little old Leicester, where nothing makes the national headlines and nothing as bad as this has been in the news, in my lifetime of living here. It is a pure and only set up and they are being charged with something that they havnt done. Someone is responsible for vina’s death but the prosecutors are looking in the wrong direction. I sat beside Farrell 3 days after he killed this poor defenceless woman at his divorce hearing and I will never forget the coolness and cold calculated manner of this man. He is an atrocious individual who lied throughout his divorce case and lied to the jury in Nottingham about his divorce. This is a result for society. However nothing in the world can compensate for the horrendous pain and suffering that the Patel family have endured. My prayers are and always have been with the Patel’s and I wish them all peace.
