My Chinese name 洛克!
My trip home this summer was absolutely amazing! I was so busy, but it was always doing something fun and interesting. My main priority was to go home and be the best man for my friend James at his wedding! Wow, what a responsibility! I have never been a best man before so I was very nervous, but proud to be chosen as the best man for the job.
I was also very busy trying to get around the country to see all my friends too. I had so many fun adventures with them and my family too. I think I should come home for ‘holiday’ more often! Every time come, time is short and these moments seem that much more special.
Beijing Capital Airport. It’s so big and clean!
My journey was filled with mishaps and misundertandings, which made for a stressful beginning to the trip. First of all, I thought it would be a good idea to try and get the ticket cheaper as summer flights are so much more expensive than other times. My flights alone cost me over 10,000RMB (£1000) compared to 5000RMB when I came here the very first time, compared to 7000RMB when I came back during Spring Festival.. Prices are getting crazy!
I have some advice for you all – never book flights separately when you have no intention of staying in a country. For example, I booked one leg of my flight to Moscow, then planned to ‘transfer’ to another flight to London, then to Edinburgh. This way, my overall flight price was reduced by about 4000RMB.
The problem was, I would have needed a visa in Russia even though I was not planning to actually set foot in Russia (outside of the airport). The reason is because if your flights are booked separately, the airline will not automatically transfer luggage to the next airline, you need to pass customs and collect your bag in the usual way. Passing customs, you may need a visa depending on your nationality.
I was lucky this time as the airline I went with allowed me to take my oversized bag on as ‘hand luggage’ to avoid me needing to pass customs in Russia
Well, I made it to Edinburgh! This was my first time setting foot in Scotland! What a beautiful place! I went there because that’s where my friend was having his stag do!
I love how green everywhere here in Edinburgh is! It’s so pretty and relaxing!
Architecture here has been well preserved, like many cities in the UK. This is so different to most Chinese cities where only special emperor’s buildings and parks are preserved. Most buildings here in Beijing arerelatively new, for example 80s or after.
I love the cafe culture here, it reminds me of France or Spain, with everyone relaxing outside over light beverages and snacks. Ahh, this is the life!
Cobbled street, looks so much better than just plain old concrete or tarmac right?! It was hilly in some parts of Edinburgh.
Can you play bagpipes?
There are always street performers in the UK. Some of them are pretty good, some of them need to just go home and stop wasting my time. This one was in the middle. I couldn’t decide if I was really interested or not.
The weather was so good, so everyone came outside! Me and my family always joke about people at home – when there is a little bit of sun, everyone wants to take off their shirt and behave like it’s 30+ degrees, haha. We all like the sun though, so I don’t really blame people for getting carried away.
Who doesn’t love Nando’s eh?
Fish and chips! It’d been a long time since I had this! Can’t wait to have it again
We wore morph suits on a party night out! Lots of fun!
The groom wore a pink suit!
The party crew!
We had some fun times tubing in Edinburgh! Of course, I fell out many times as you’ll see below.. It was my first time, and I definitely want to do it again!!
Enough pizza? I think so!! There were some stories about the jalapeno pizza haha, right Tom?! :-p
Beautiful flowers in the apartment we rented.
Then I went to Manchester to meet my friend who I haven’t seen for AGES!! It was good fun, though I didn’t have so much time there this time.
Beetham Tower, Manchester. This is the UK’s second tallest building outside London. UK clearly doesn’t have many tall building.
Is this the ugliest shopping centre in the UK? Victoria Centre, Nottingham.
Market Square, Nottingham
There were so many people in Market Square!
Cheese on toast.
Do you like chese on toast? I remember, whenever I had time in the Morning, I’d have this for breakfast. So good with a cup of tea!
I love looking at urban green areas. Parks in cities, especially when they look natural. Parks here in Beijing always have a formal feel to them, not very relaxing like back home.
Wait, what? Since when were they putting random words on Coke bottles? Here in China, they use all kinds of different Chinee names on bottles.
Well, there are some people who have never seen the inside of a Nottingham double decker bus, so I took a photo.
My friend had a surprise graduation party at his house, and his band set up in the back garden! Lots of fun.
Flower in my back garden.
These pics are from when it flooded in Nottingham. It was crazy stuff! I made it onto the news haha!
Here is where my friend got married. Was a good ceremony and everything went smoothly.
And another one..
Just before I came back to Beijing, me and my friend Nicky went to Newquay! It was so much fun! We went to the beach and I got sunburnt (again).. Darn. I always get sunburnt!
On the way to Newquay!
A UK post box. Very traditional.
My first ever Cornish pasty
Baby seagull. A seagull stole my friend’s ice cream from out of her hand haha! That was one of the funniest moments of this trip! Haha!
I went to have a dinner with my parents at an Indian restaurant we have been going to for years! It was delicious as always and the manager reminded us how long we’ve been going there and how much me and my brother have grown haha.
Then, it was all over.. Time to go back home.. Until next time!
Then I went back to Beijing! But…. I will be back in Nottingham again for Christmas this year!! Yeaa!!
