Earthquake in Nottingham

Earthquake in Nottingham

Anyone feel the earthquake? Struck approximately 00:58 on 27/02/08. As yet I am not sure how widespread it was but since Nottingham is nowhere near any tectonic plates, my guess is that it hit the whole of the UK.

It wasn’t that intense, but I heard it coming a good 20 seconds before I felt it. At first I thought someone was kicking the hell out of a bin or something outside until I felt the house rocking!

The tremor lasted about maybe 10 seconds and was like a train passing beneath my feet. It came faintly, then louder, then I felt it, then it left loudly, and faded again. Probably just a typical tremor but not usual for Nottingham at all.

Underneath door-frames are supposedly the safest places to go since they are mighty strong and the roof is less likely to cave in on you there, so of course that’s where I went. Just in case this tremor turned out to be something crazy!

You may guess, I do not like earthquakes. This is not the first time I have experienced an earthquake. When I was living back in Jamaica I felt a much bigger tremor than this but that was many years ago, so this one is fresh in the mind.

I switched over to the news shortly after to see if I could find out how widespread it was but they seem to be a little slow compiling the story. Even a ticker along the bottom of the screen with any information would have been good.

Update: (01:37) Epicentre was 15 miles north east of Lincoln.

Update: (01:45:) the exact time according to US Geological survey was 00:56:45 time, see below screen shot.

Update: (08:35) Magnitude of quake adjusted to 5.2 on Richter scale according to British Geological Survey, see below screenshot.

Update: (14:00) This has been the UK’s biggest earthquake in 25 years!

  1. Yes. frightened me stiff.

The trap door on my loft was shaking loke mad. very scarey

  2. Similar to one we had a few years ago except that was in daytime. Our garage door shook so much I thought someone had crashed into it.

  3. We felt the quake in Mansfield, woke us up, and my neighbours. Can’t see any damage, but it,s still dark.

  4. Yea, although it was pretty unexpected was it really that bad to cause all that damage the news reckons happened?

  5. It was really frightening! I was fast aleep however my phone fell down from my computer & them it started to ring. then within atter of seconds my window started shaking & soon after the cupboards started to move. Thankfully no one has died but it could have been lot worse if it was about 6.3!

  6. ilkeston, derbyshire. all my wardrobe doors opened and the computer desk shook its self across the room. woke up the wife who blamed me for turning over in the bed. my todler slept through it all (phewwwww).

  7. I think i might be the only casualty in nottingham.I was on stairs painting at the time when the earth quake hit. At first i thought it was abig lorry coming down street, and the next thing i knew i got chucked down the stairs and my head hit the wall causing me to have a nasty cut on my head.which knocked me out.when i woke up i got outside and all the neighbours was out in the street! it crazy. as far i knew it didn’t cause any damage to houses etc.so think we were quite lucky!

  8. Sounds like this earthquake did cause some disruption! Just to think that it was ‘only’ 5.2! Well, I can’t imagine what people in other countries that get ones measuring 6+ must feel like!
